PROBLEM:
Coordinated Systems Consulting Inc. (CSC), and our engineering partner, FYFE Engineering, LLC., reviewed the detail prepared by NYS-Office of General Services prior to beginning work on April 17, 2019. Based on the loading requirements, measurements, details, and notes provided throughout the detailed drawings, CSC (with engineering support from FYFE Company) developed an engineered solution for the use of TYFO Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite Systems. The solution required the structural reinforcement of approximately 7 Beams that were approximately 2.5” wide at the bottom and approximately 32’ long.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Design of CFRP system.
Layout and Surface Preparation of all strengthening areas
Surface preparation to grind clear irregularities, unevenness, sharp protrusions etc., Surface preparing includes chamfering sharp edges to a minimum radius of 1 inch, filling of minor voids and depressions with proprietary epoxy to accommodate FRP installation, surface profiling of any remaining unevenness with epoxy greater in strength than original concrete, and surface cleaning to remove all laitance and foreign particles..
Furnish and install specified layers and extents of the proposed Carbon FRP System in accordance with approved submittals.
Clean-up of waste to dumpsters provided by others located within close proximity to our work, disposal by others
De-mobilization from project site.
ANALYSIS:
CSC conducted a job site visit prior to initial mobilization of labor in order to establish greater familiarity of the locations needing reinforcement including the quantity, size, and exact location of the areas for repair. Following the initial site-visit, CSC technicians were then mobilized and began to prepare for installation of CFRP Product by preparing the surfaces requiring repair for installation. The surfaces were prepared by grinding irregularities to achieve proper concrete surface profile and further clearing the areas of any residual debris to ensure the best possible bonding of CFRP to the substrate surface.
SOLUTION:
After completing all required surface preparation, a prime coat of thickened Tyfo® S Epoxy was applied to the substrate to fill all minor imperfections, deflection, voids, etc. The TYFO CFRP SCH-41 fabric was then hand saturated to ensure proper impregnation with Tyfo® S Epoxy. Saturated TYFO CFRP SCH-41 was then applied to the surface and all air bubbles were worked out of the system. System was then leveled, set, and sealed using an additional coat of thickened Tyfo® S Epoxy.
RESULTS:
After completing the CFRP installation and allowing the fiber to cure, CSC Foreman Rod Venner ensured the accuracy and quality of the work by performing a final inspection prior to preparing to de-mobilize. Mr. Venner verified that all CFRP was applied according to approved engineering plans and that the work was of quality standard as required by CSC.
