LOGAN
CORRECTIONAL

PROBLEM:

Logan Correctional Facility has contacted Coordinated Systems Consulting Inc. for the remediation of Housing Unit 9, significantly deteriorated due to its age. Exposed, corroded rebar and widespread concrete issues, including cracks, poor consolidation, and delamination, signal severe structural compromise. The damage, fueled by moisture and chloride ion penetration, undermines the facility's safety and requires a focused plan on reinforcement, concrete repair, and protection against further environmental degradation.

SOLUTION:

The project addressed severe deterioration caused by aging, including exposed corroded rebar and concrete defects. The solution involved neutralizing corrosion, repairing concrete, and applying specialized treatments and reinforcements. Key components included Surtreat's corrosion inhibition treatments, concrete repair, and FRP reinforcement from Fyfe FRP. Coordinated Systems Consulting's dual certification in Surtreat and Fyfe FRP applications facilitated efficient project management. Overall, the project demonstrates a commitment to delivering effective, cost-efficient solutions for critical infrastructure challenges, ensuring safety and extending the lifespan of essential facilities.

TESTING:

Pull-off testing was performed in accordance with ASTM 7522, the measurements of this test provides a direct indication of the strength of adhesion between the coating and substrate.

For FRP strengthening typically requires a minimum pull off test of 200 PSI. With the use of Surtreat we were able to significantly increase the pull off strength of concrete due to the concrete densifying properties of Surtreat, thus increasing the quality of the repair and the structural integrity of the facility.

PICTURED: Pull test performed prior to installation of Surtreat with a result of 356 PSI and after 536 PSI after the installation of Surtreat, Surtreat significantly increased the concretes’ adhesion strength.

CONCLUSION:

After completing the CFRP installation, pull testing was performed on areas to demonstrate an increase in PSI. All areas passed this pull test and the results can be viewed in the images above. A total of 25,000 square feet of concrete was treated with Surtreat and over 42,000 square feet of FRP was installed.
